Air Permeability and Natural Ventilation: Finding the Right Balance
Air Permeability and Natural Ventilation: Finding the Right Balance

Understanding air permeability is essential in building design as it determines how much air can pass through the materials of the building envelope, impacting energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and comfort. Key factors include the materials used, construction quality, and design elements. Natural ventilation, using natural forces like wind and thermal buoyancy, can provide fresh air and regulate temperatures, enhancing energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Balancing air permeability and natural ventilation is crucial, and strategies like controlled permeability, optimised ventilation paths, and the use of high-quality materials can help achieve this. Advanced techniques and real-world examples illustrate the effectiveness of these methods.
