‘Wonderful’ plans for new development in Beeston, Nottingham

A large development on the site of a former factory site has been welcomed as "wonderful" after the green light was given to start construction. A four-storey building of 53 retirement apartments will be built at the land at the former Myford engineering site in Ellis Grove, Beeston.

Plans were a positive development on the vacant land

Local residents said the plans were a positive development on the vacant land, which was located in a convenient position in the town.

Rita Crost, 88, who is retired and lives in Beeston, said: “It’s a wonderful location for it, it will be very convenient for the people that live here.

“You have the shops right outside and then you’ve got tram stop where you can go down to Tesco.

“The space has been vacant for a while and there’s a need for retirement housing certainly. It’s a very good idea.

“In terms of any problems, I don’t think the people there will need much parking so that shouldn’t be too bad for their neighbours.

Help with a shortage of retirement accommodation for a reasonable price for older people

“I looked at some [retirement apartments] in Long Eaton and they were lovely but I don’t want to live there. These could be good.”

Retiree Keith Berridge, 71, from Beeston, said: “I think it would put the space here to good use.

“It’s great to see improvements being made and this would help with a shortage of retirement accommodation for a reasonable price for older people.

“It’s quite a narrow street that wraps around it, but you would have thought that would have been taken into account by the developers and the council.

“If the plans are well thought through with some common sense, and if the building ends up looking nice, then I can’t see it being a bad thing.”

The former Myfords site between Ellis Grove and Barrydale Avenue was demolished in 2017.

The factory, which manufactured machine tools and lathes, closed in 2011.

Steve Fox, 85, a retiree from Beeston said: “I don’t see why not when they’re nothing there at the minute.

“Maybe it sounds a bit tall but I suppose it’s the same size as the Co-op, so it’s not that bad.

“It’s a good thing to build more housing in general really no matter who it’s for.”

Planning permission was granted for the construction of 66 bed care home

In June 2021 planning permission was granted for the construction of 66 bed care home behind the site for the new retirement apartments.

And 47 homes have previously been built nearby on more land once occupied by the Myford factory.

A council document read: “The proposed development will provide targeted accommodation in a sustainable location and the design of the development is considered to be acceptable.
