In an ambitious move to revitalise Stockport, a housing association, Great Places, is planning to invest £28.7 million in a new development that promises to bring significant benefits to the town centre. 144 New Affordable Homes Planned for Stockport Town Centre

Great Places has submitted plans for two modern buildings at the corner of King Street West and Chestergate, offering a total of 144 apartments. These well-designed properties will include a mix of one and two-bedroom flats and duplexes, catering to diverse housing needs.

Affordable Rental Opportunities and ‘Right to Buy’ Scheme

The first of the ‘mirrored’ blocks will feature 96 flats available for affordable rent. Overlooking Chestergate, the L-shaped building stands predominantly seven-storey tall but gracefully descends to six and five levels along its eastern side. The second block will offer 48 properties under the government-backed ‘right to buy’ scheme, enabling renters to avail themselves of a 20% discount while saving for a future home purchase.

Reviving a Regeneration Zone

Strategically located within the Town Centre West regeneration zone, this development is an integral part of Stockport’s burgeoning 3,500 home ‘urban village.’ The area currently features a mix of underutilised properties, including vacant, tired, and derelict buildings and open land primarily used for motor vehicle storage. To make way for the new project, the long-vacant Mentor House, part of the former Chestergate Hat Company offices, a former newsagent, and the former Kidsaurus play centre, will be demolished.
